Poetica is a gathering of poets, poetry lovers, wordsmiths, singer-songwriters, artists, musicians and kindred folk who appreciate words, community and the arts as vital ingredients for thriving humans.
history ~ now
Poetica started in September 2017 at Gertrude and Alice Bookstore in Bondi Beach, Sydney. The short story is that Miriam emailed G&A owner Jane asking if she could host a monthly night of poetry in Jane’s bookstore. A resounding ‘YES’ from Jane set the poetry wheels in motion and Poetica was born. What started as a very intimate night for about 40 people has now blossomed into a growing community of hundreds who now meet monthly at larger venues for open mic nights and on other occasions for tribute nights. There is now also Poetica Petit – a more intimate night for poetry and music at Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf, Occasionally, on very special occasions the Poetica tribe return to the G&A nest for very intimate poetry tribute nights. And the best chai tea in town.
HOW WE DO what we do
Poetica is first and foremost a night for wordsmithing. We want to hear your words. Poets are invited to participate by putting their name in the hat to perform or read their poetry in an open mic style format. 3 minutes is the max and all words must be original. Poets are also able to bring an instrument and perform. Each month we have a feature poet who has an extended session showcasing their poetry and their craft. We also have a feature singer-songwriter/s for the night who performs for a set. We now also have a sunrise poets group who meet monthly in Bondi to listen to poetry and write original poetry. The Poetica community is a diverse community of people. We welcome all.
