The History of Poetica

Poetica is the brainchild of Miriam Hechtman. Poetica started in September 2017 at Gertrude and Alice Bookstore in Bondi Beach, Sydney. The short story is that Miriam emailed G&A owner Jane Turner asking if she could host a monthly night of poetry in Jane’s bookstore. A resounding ‘YES’ from Jane set the poetry wheels in motion and Poetica was born.

What started as a very intimate night for about 40 people has now blossomed into a growing community of thousands who now meet for open mic nights, tribute nights, workshops and literary events.

There is now also Poetica Petit – a dedicated night for poetry and music at Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf.

And now, in a dream come true and to celebrate Poetica’s 7th birthday in September 2024 – Poetica has opened its own little home at 163 Clovelly Rd, Randwick. The space is available for hire. See here for details.
