Mark your diaries and book your ticket. On September 10 we will be celebrating the 91st birthday of our beloved yet departed Mary Oliver at Poetica Petit at @woollahragallery . Charles Freyberg, Lily B, Bob Dylan Growing up. That’s the underlying theme of my next writing project with @jessicachapnikkahn . We are going back to our early teen years and imagining the letters we may have written to each other if we’d known each other then. So I’ve been diving in to my past. Going through the boxes, the letters and my first poems. I wrote these when I was 14. I remember it so clearly. I made my first poetry journal out of a foolscap exercise book that I contacted. And the line about the flock of birds was a bit of a lightbulb moment. That I could express time through nature. And death. Of course I was a little obsessed with this idea of death and endings and the existential nature of our lives. Seasons, birds, trees - who knew that Mary Oliver would be waiting for me on the other side of teen-hood? This one is selling fast. @bobdylan ‘s Blood on the Tracks is perfection. Join us at A Whole Album on July 21 at @163clovelly . Charles Freyberg has been a Poetica devotee since our summer nights at Speakeasy Bar in Bondi in 2018 when we were looking for our next home. Fast forward to 2026 and Charles has written several poetry books, performed many times and now he joins us with his latest offering "Sacred Remnants." But please read poems and write poems. Yes, we have the grand old open mic this Thursday night at Poetica Petit at @woollahragallery ! Poets you are welcome to share your words. Theme this month is POSTCODES. 3 mins max. Tell us about a place you know. Maybe you lived there. Maybe you dream of going there. Next Thursday we have a big glorious night at Poetica with the book launch of Yvette Henry Holt’s new book of poems, who will be in conversation with @michele_seminara . Plus we have @donleaton playing some soulful tunes for us. You might recognize Don from @thevoiceau back in 2016! Well I found Don singing a tune in the garden at @cafeonefourthree a couple of months ago and had no idea who he was but I like his vibe and his sound so I invited him to Poetica. What a glorious workshop today. I guess using a book of happy poems as a prompt was a good idea …
