Autumn at Poetica

Are you feeling the chill in the air? A season change is most definitely upon us here in Sydney. This morning as I drove my oldest daughter to her bus stop for school, my youngest daughter commented on how the sun was still rising at 7.30. It was so beautiful to hear her noticing this and for us all then to really look out and up to the sky in our mad dash to get to the bus on time. The shorter days and the gradual surrender to colder, darker mornings is an invitation to go a little more inward.

These next two months of autumn are golden with poetry possibilities. Tomorrow we listen and write at Poems for Prompts and next week we get to write again at Poetica Petit – Write With Us plus we hear from several poets from The Heroines Anthology Vol. 5 at its Sydney launch. Jazz musician Gamran Green will play for us while we write. Plus the open mic!

In May we have back-to-back big nights of poetry and song. May 7 – Irish poet and theologian Pádraig Ó Tuama graces us with his presence here in Sydney and Huck Hastings returns to Poetica to start the night in song. Then on May 8, on the timely theme of Mother, we welcome back Jessica Chapnik Kahn with her precious book of poetry MADRE. Composer Anna Hirst Friedman has selected several poems from the book and put them to music. They will be performed by a six-piece vocal ensemble. Jessica and Anna will also be in conversation with Miriam about the process. Plus the open mic on the theme of Mother.

Hope to see you at Poetica soon!
